Step Ahead static 2017

We are excited to announce that the application process for the 2017-2018 Step Ahead Scholarship is now open!

The Step Ahead Scholarship is a county-wide, post-secondary program for young women who are committed to positively impacting Memphis by encouraging academic success and effective life planning.

The program is a collaborative effort of A Step Ahead Foundation and Girls Inc. of Memphis that supports each organization's commitment to encouraging the educational advancement and leadership development of young women in the greater Memphis area. A third partner, Tri-State Bank Memphis, manages the scholarship program

Now entering its fourth year, the scholarship is available to any female Shelby County resident, age 17 to 30, with plans to attend an accredited institution of post-secondary education. The program has awarded a total $300,000 in the last three years.

Multiple scholarships of at least $2,000 will be awarded from a $100,000 fund. Awards will be based on strength of application and estimated financial need. Each award is a one-time, annual scholarship—but recipients are encouraged to maintain good academic status and reapply each year as needed. Preference will be given to applicants who intend to use their education to help the community, and who express a desire to lower rates of teen and unplanned pregnancy in the greater Memphis area.

  • Award letters will be sent by May 15
  • Scholarship funds will be made out to the academic institutions beginning in mid-June.
